The Plan

The main Cathedral building will look in essence like it did before the earthquakes. There’s a commitment to retain and reinstate as much of its original design as possible.

What will be different is that the Cathedral will be reinstated to meet 100% of the Building Code (seismic) with the main Cathedral building base-isolated.

Improvements will be made to such aspects as the heating, sound and lighting systems.

The updated facilities and new ancillary buildings will be designed to improve the Cathedral’s functionality as a place of worship and increase its value as a community asset and city tourism destination.
