Stabilisation Visitors' Centre

The original Visitors’ Centre was finished in in 1995.  It is being demolished because it has been flooded with contaminated water since the earthquake, has a damaged basement, and is not fit for reuse. Demolishing it also enables critical safe access to stabilise the north transept and access to the east end of the Cathedral that would otherwise result in disruptions to the tram and traffic around the site.

November 2020 – Work to demolish the Visitors’ Centre is underway (see photo above) and due to finish in late November 2020.  The Citizens’ War Memorial is being very carefully protected during this and all other work.
