Stabilisation Visitors' Centre
The original Visitors’ Centre was finished in in 1995. It is being demolished because it has been flooded with contaminated water since the earthquake, has a damaged basement, and is not fit for reuse. Demolishing it also enables critical safe access to stabilise the north transept and access to the east end of the Cathedral that would otherwise result in disruptions to the tram and traffic around the site.
