Request for Order in Council

July 8, 2020
Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited (CCRL) has asked the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration to consider recommending an Order in Council to the Governor-General.

This is in accordance with Part 2 of the Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Act 2017.  The Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Act 2017 was enacted recognising the Cathedral’s contribution to cultural, social and economic wellbeing in Christchurch, its importance to Christchurch’s regeneration, and its heritage value.

CCRL has made the request because the reinstatement of the Cathedral is a complex process which requires substantive works.  Using a normal RMA process would likely cause delays, increase costs and create uncertainty for the project.

The resource consent process set out by the Order in Council is streamlined and still ensures consenting authorities (Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury) have a complete view of the consent process and the opportunity to make a balanced assessment of all work effects.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet is managing the process and more information is available on their website.
